Starting idea

Information about a song is usually written in a simple way: Song name - Performer - Album. This is pretty naive as it doesn't suit to many cases:

• the song has been edited on more than one album
• there is a live and a studio recording of the same song
• a singer is performing the song of another singer
• a singer that used to sing in a band now sings alone
• etc.

The solution

Because of all of these reasons, it was necessary to create a database whose structure better matches the reality. There a four main concepts describing a discography:

• A band - it is the name used to sign a song. It can be a band or a singer
• A song - that is composed once and performed many times
• An album - is a media grouping a set of performances
• An artist - is a person that sings a song, composes it, etc.

The most important information is contained by the links between these items: which songs are part of an album, what artist contributed to a song, etc.
The whole structure allows to display data in many different ways: a song is referenced in its album, composer, singer...
